It supports 43 characters: A to Z, 0 to 9, space and - . $ / + %. Asterisks are added automatically as start and stop characters. It produces longer codes than Code 128, but nearly every scanner and label printer supports it, which is why the automotive industry (AIAG) and the US military (LOGMARS) used it for decades.
